THE SABBATINE PRIVILEGE
The Blessed Virgin of Mt. Carmel has promised to save those who wear the scapular from the fires of hell; She will also shorten their stay in Purgatory if they should pass from this world still owing some debt of punishment.
This promise is found in a Bull of Pope John XXII. The Blessed Virgin appeared to him and, speaking of those who wear the Brown Scapular, said: "I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory, I shall free, so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting."
The Blessed Virgin assigned certain conditions which must be fulfilled:
1) Wear the Brown Scapular continuously.
2) Observe chastity according to one's state in life.
(Married/single)
3) Recite daily the "Little Office of the Blessed Virgin."
Or, A) To observe the fasts of the Church together with abstaining from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Or, B) With permission of a Priest to say five decades of Our Lady's Most Holy Rosary.
Or, C) With permission of a Priest to substitute some other good work.
Note: You cannot substitute for the first two conditions: wearing the scapular; and, observing chastity.
Pope Benedict XV, the celebrated World War I Pontiff, granted 500 days indulgence for devoutly kissing your scapular.
[Indulgence: The remission in whole or in part for the temporal punishment due to sins; Remission of time spent in Purgatory.]
SCAPULAR ENROLLMENT
According to a statement made by the Carmelite Fathers, at the National Scapular Center, every Priest now has the right to invest the Faithful in the Brown Scapular, and to substitute the Rosary in lieu of the "Little Office".
THE SCAPULAR MUST BE 100% WOOL WITHOUT PLASTIC CASING AND SHOULD NOT BE PINNED OR AFFIXED TO CLOTHING. PICTURES ARE NOT NECESSARY.
Scapulars made of metals are acceptible when it is not possible to wear wool. We carry only 100% wool scapulars, and metal scapulars. Each wool scapular sold comes with literature you may present to your priest instructing him in the procedure for the blessing and investiture. Once you have been enrolled initially, all other scapulars you wear for the rest of your life will be considered blessed, and do not have to be 're-blessed'. The scapular is a great grace and mercy from the Lord presented through the Blessed Mother. The small irritation you may receive wearing a wool scapular, especially in a tropical climate, is but a tiny irritation compared to suffering eternally the fires of hell. Considering the great graces received through this devotion, you should not let vanity deprive you from taking advantage of this privilege.
As a blessed object, old scapulars should never be discarded in the trash, but buried. Worn scapulars should be replaced as needed. Hand washing and air drying is recommended for the care of your wool scapular.
Scapular Medals have 2 images: one side shows the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the other side will have Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
